HARPOON HEAD
Yup'ik culture, Northwest Coast
19th century
Marine ivory, iron and copper
H.: 3.5; Length: 13 cm
Harpoon head with a flat belly with a median ridge and a base worked into a spur intended to receive the iron blade, riveted with a copper nail. Four beveled recesses are visible on the lateral parts and were used to hold the ties and a lodge topped with summit spurs referring to stylized feathers.
The way in which the object is presented makes us think of a stylized bird's head, the beak half-open.
