BOOT GRATTOIR called T'iiguzat
Inuit culture, Alaska
18th century or earlier
Marine ivory
Length: 8.5; L.: 5.2 cm
(old crack)
An instrument reserved for women, this stylized cetacean-shaped scraper was used to work the skin used to make boots.
The scraper's blade, slightly flared and hollowed out, is located at the end of the polylobed handle - the tail of the sea mammal, making the tool easier to grip and handle.
