    Noh Theater Mask - Japan
    in painted wood
    Meji Era (1868-1912)

Noh theater masks can be divided into three main families: that of humans, men and women, that of ghosts and spirits; and finally that of demons, supernatural presences. Demon masks or Kishin are recognizable by their red skin and golden eyes as on this mask presented here.
Kishin (demon) masks are used to represent two main types of otherworldly creatures: tobide (fierce gods or demonic spirits) and beshimi (goblins and other creatures).
