Shakyamuni Buddha taking the earth as witness (Bhumisparsa mudra) is seated in padmasana on his throne, festooned with lotus leaves and supported by four elephants.
The elephant is one of the most popular symbols of Buddhism, associated with abundance, fertility, strength... and mental strength: lucidity and clairvoyance. It is also the mount of kings.
This Buddha image is carved in one piece and covered with lacquer (Thayo), Ava style, Shan States, 18th/19th century.
Provenance: Estate of art dealer Claude de Marteau.
