BASKET for IKEBANA called Hanakago Shichiku
Japan
End of the Meiji era (1868-1912)
bamboo and root
H.: 41; L.: 16 cm
Braided bamboo basket cylindrical in shape on the upper part, giving a circular neck and sides on the lower part, hexagonal in shape and resting on four feet.
It has an asymmetrical handle made up of a root with four long branches that complete its ornamentation.
It retains its otoshi - its inner blackened bamboo vessel. Its dark appearance was achieved by smoking the material.
This basket was reserved for ikebana, which can be translated by the floral arrangement, which accompanied the tea ceremony. The term ikebana is made up of ikeru meaning "to live" and hana meaning "flower". Thus, ikebana is the art of bringing flowers to life in a chosen and visible composition.
Let us add that particular properties are attributed to bamboo, which is even credited with the value of supporting the spirit.
