BÂTON Mbweci
Lwena Chokwé culture, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola
Circa 1900
Wood
H. 41; L 3 cm
A monoxyl cane top with a cylindrical shaft, the upper part of which is carved in four slightly convex sections, and is animated - on the front and back faces - by four triangular masks symmetrically organized in five superimposed registers, punctuated by fine geometric incisions forming knots. Lateral cartouches of the same number are animated by obliques.
The pommel is carved with a dignitary's face in the round, wearing a "tota"-shaped headdress with characteristic parallel incisions, associated with the power and authority of chiefs.
