Superb large BAMBARA or BAMANA door lock from Mali (59cm). Among the Bambara, there are many terms to designate a lock. The most common is "konbarabara" (literally "door protuberance"). It is generally made up of two pieces arranged in a cross comprising a vertical element, the box, fixed to the door using two irons and a horizontal element, the crosspiece or the bolt.
These locks are not only utilitarian, but also true artistic creations. Bamana locks are also among the most remarkable works of African art.
This type of lock could be intended for public uses, such as closing the doors of religious sanctuaries, as well as for private uses: domestic hut, bedroom, attics, etc.
A very beautiful example of an old lock from Mali representing a standing man, his head slightly lowered. This magnificent lock has a superb encrusted patina due to use and its age. Piece sold with a base.
