LOBI man's stool, "toopar" (wood 80X20cm) decorated with two anthropomorphic heads. A man acquires this stool as a sign of adulthood during his initiation into male society and the construction of his family shrine. This tripod stool has a long, protruding front leg and two shorter rear legs, above which are carved two human heads. The shape of the stool is said to derive from a farmer's hoe planted in the ground, a description that underlines the Lobi's self-identification as farmers. Lobi men carry these stools with them wherever they go, carrying them over their left shoulder with the single long leg hanging over their chest. Sitting on one's stool helps protect the owner from contact with potentially hostile spirits if he is away from home in unfamiliar terrain. Hardwood, dry patina of use, signs of wear, desiccation cracks
