Statuette presenting a bust character. The arms are along the body, the hands resting on the hips. The navel is prominent. The simple face is structured by strong brow ridges that come together to form the nose. Scarifications start from the top of the head and go down along the nose. It is a traditional pattern from the Ubangi region which is particularly popular with the Ngbaka. The look is enhanced with small white pearls embedded in the eyes. He still wears a brass collar around his neck. The skull has a top cavity where the magic charge was placed.
This statuette is quite special in its design and is the work of the Zande people from South Sudan.
It is called Yanda (the spirit, the force) of the Mani cult and had the role of preserving the well-being of the community while providing a therapeutic and protective function. It could sometimes also be used to formulate divinatory omens.
