STATUETTE janus
Culture Suku, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
Wood and pigments
Height: 44; Wt: 13; Thickness: 11 cm
(old slot)
Two leaning figures are carved in the wood so as to constitute a single Janiform figure. It has two pairs of legs, its four upper limbs are arranged in the same way: the hands joined below the chest. A single neck rises to give rise to two faces with half-closed eyes and thin, slightly upturned noses. They differentiate into a variation of streaks on the cuff. The first has them obliquely, drawn around a median line, for the second, they are part of the extension of the forehead. This difference extends to their sexual attributes which identify a man and a woman.
