Large sculpture of a Fang reliquary effigy from southern Cameroon or northern Gabon. The object measures 59 cms excluding the base, being a hardwood statue of medium density. The quality of the work of the sculpture is quite remarkable, a statue of Byeri of an impressive presence with a particularly successful work on the head, a prognathic mouth and glass eyes (influence of the neighboring Kongo ethnic groups), and a headdress at the back of the skull with a central ridge. The ears are not represented. The very aesthetic shiny patina is deep with scarifications on the body. It is an unpublished object without pedigree and of unknown dating, proposed for its aesthetic quality quite remarkable. It is to be noted that the left leg has been glued back together without being missing. The metal base is of recent manufacture.
