This African wooden statuette is a traditional Mossi doll. Its name Biiga doll means “wooden child” in Mooré, the language of the Mossi. In this majority ethnic group of Burkina Faso, it is a statuette symbolizing fertility and motherhood. Thus, the Biiga doll is as much a toy as an initiatory object. It accompanies girls, but also women who hope to conceive soon, until motherhood. The Biiga doll is a statuette made of light wood – karitier, myrobalan from Egypt or caïlcedrat – typical of traditional African art. Biiga dolls are an almost abstract representation of the female morphology. Most are in the Boulsa style and come from the Northeast of Burkina Faso. Beautiful patina, slight traces of wear or friction and small desiccation cracks guarantee their authenticity.
