Beautiful male specimen of carved tji wara crest, from the Segou region, meaning "earth beast"! These stylized wooden antelopes, often in pairs, carved with geometric lines, were fixed on the heads of dancers during agricultural festivals rewarding the best farmers. The very imposing and advantageous sex of the male underlines the fertilizing aspect on the earth. These ceremonies celebrate the mythical union between the sun, which refers to the male principle, and the earth, the feminine principle, while stimulating the ardor of the young farmers to work.
Superb representation of the stylized hippotragus antelope engraved with geometric patterns, leather and horsehair at the top of the horns and the presence of cowries hanging from the ears.
