    France, 19th century
Corozo nut, mother-of-pearl, wood and metal
    H. 9.3; L. 4 cm
    (old accidents)

Tobacco box in corozo nut carved with a seated man, his regulation pack on his back, holding his beard, wearing a black wooden cap with pearl and star inlays.
On the reverse, the lid, which was once made mobile by a metal hinge, remains correctly seated.

The term Grognard refers to the name given to the soldiers of Napoleon Bonaparte's imperial guard, known as the Vieille Garde - it included both Grenadiers and Chasseurs.
