This set includes surgeon's tools from the early 20th century.
These instruments, developed by Pierre-Jules Béniqué (1806-1851), were used to dilate the male urethra, following narrowing caused by local bacterial or parasitic infection, resulting in urinary retention. These curved probes are numbered from 37 to 60. From one graduation to the next, the diameter varies by one-sixth of a mm.
These instruments were used extensively during the Great War, due to the high incidence of venereal disease at the time. We note stains on the case, detached corners, a screw missing from the clasp, oxidation on the copper plate, traces of wear and deformation on the tools.
