    ARTICULATED TOY
Kobe, Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) circa 1900
    Wood and bone
    H. 10; L 6 cm

Carved and articulated wooden toy depicting a waiter or an eating man. He is dressed in a kimono and carries a dish and bottle in each hand, his eyes are two small inlaid bone beads, and the lower part of his body is enclosed in a wooden base with two-tone checkerboard marquetry. One side features a thumbwheel to animate the figure. Arms, head and mouth are articulated.

This automaton harks back to the folk art of the city of Kobe.
