Rare secret book. It was hollowed out to create a cavity, so that a deck of cards, precious objects or a licentious work could be hidden in a library, safe from the anonymity of a row of real books.
Beautifully bound in the 18th century, this is the first volume of the précis de l'histoire universelle, 1784 edition. The front cover is embellished with the arms of an aristocratic family, under a Count's crown.
In good condition, with some wear at the joint between cover and binding.
