Buddhist monastery chest intended to house and protect sacred manuscripts, called Sadaik.
Burma.
19th
In solid teak painted in brown-red, abundantly and very richly decorated on the front and on the sides with geometric patterns and interlacing as well as Apsaras in superimposed friezes, in molded gold lacquer and carved using the Thayo technique and embellished around the edges and corners of intense blue and green mirrors and glassware.
Sadaiks were commissioned by wealthy noble families and high officials to be offered to monasteries.
Our Sadaik has a very strong and enigmatic presence, and is an original and refined decorative element.
Its condition is very good considering its origin and age. Tiny wear on the lacquer and a few rare lacks of glassware on the sides.
A specimen undoubtedly coming from the same workshop as ours is in the monastery of Htee Hlaing, Wundwin city, Mandalay, Myanmar. We present you the photo.
