Magnificent and rare physionotrace by Augustin de St Aubin (1736-1807) depicting the profile portraits of an 18th-century aristocratic couple (unidentified portraits) engraved by Gilles Louis Chrétien (1754-1811), inventor of the physionotrace technique. This consisted in projecting the shadow of the life-size profile to be drawn onto transparent paper, then transferring it faithfully. The profile was then reduced and engraved on a copper plate.
This physionotrace has been enhanced with pencil and watercolors. It is marked "Dess. et gr. P Chrétien inv. du physionotrace passage St Honoré à Paris".
