    Jingasa samurai flat gun hat
    Nirayama type
    Japan, Late Meiji period (1868-1912)
    Vegetable fibers, lacquer and fabric
    H. 26 ; L. 51 cm

    This slightly conical circular headdress is made of woven plant fibers covered with black lacquer on the outside, with borders painted with gold pigments and a stylized star on top. The interior is red lacquered and has two cotton padded canvas socks to wear it.

    The particularity of the jingasa nirayama is its material which makes it foldable.
