In France, pewter pieces have always included, in principle, at least one punch: the master or “tin potter” punch; the potter affixed it from 1382 on pieces of “bon aloy”, that is to say fine pewter. The master potters had to present their hallmark to the jurors of the community and stamp it on a control plate. Unmarked parts risked incurring a fine.
In 1691, the hallmark must include the name and the date of admission to the mastery. The potters of certain regions are recognized by the permanent presence on their punch of characteristic patterns.
