    Venus de Milo on base
    Bronze with patina and varnish
    Dimensions: H. 29 (cm.)
    France, late 19th century

Smaller Venus de Milo on a plinth with rich molding.

At the end of the 19th century, the democratization of reduction processes, combined with the Parisian expertise of bronze workshops, led to the widespread production of these pieces.

The style of the Venus de Milo
The style is not uniform. On the upper part, the face is not very expressive, but classic in style, as is the modelling of the nude parts, with no breaks or shadow effects. At the bottom, on the other hand, the rendering of the drapery's folds is very graphic and visually outweighs the shape of the legs. This disparity has led to the suggestion that the lower section may be a late antique restoration. In fact, it is the result of a desire to create a strong contrast between the nude and the drapery. The combination of these strong stylistic effects with a return to classicism characterizes the taste of the Hellenistic period.
