RESERVED   A hand-coloured copper-plate engraving after a work by Hieronymus Scholeus showing two birds-eye views of Stockholm.  This engraving appears in Braun and Hogenburg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum which was issued in several editions towards the end of the 16th c.  The reverse of this page has latin text on one side, discussing Stockholm, but also a page number which may help date the edition that this was taken from.  There is currently one other example for sale online and it is worth looking at the Carta Historica website to read more about the painting and make comparisons.

This particular example has been in my family for many years.  This is the first time I have taken it out of the frame, although missing/replaced pins suggest it has been removed before.  The frame is no longer stable, the glass is old, highly reflective and does not protect the painting from light damage.  However, I will ship the backing board, mount and frame (not the glass), partly for protection, but partly because the board documents provenance.  This engraving appears to have been owned by the Grolier club in New York and Sotheby's autioned it for them in June 1967.  The back of the board has a chalk number in the bottom left, which is possibly to do with the auction.  At the top it says: 6/67 00/-/- ; ca 1580, top Stk from the North, bottom from the SE and under that : first factual view of Stockholm. Further along on the tape, there are a couple I can't quite work out but someone has written Grolier catalogue item 177 (I think) and under that kr 1000.  On the otherside, there are more auction marks and a label for Chapman Bros, Kings Road, Chelsea.  I can provide photos if you wish.

The engraving is in reasonable condition for its age: the paper is good, the colours are not bad, there may be some fading but it is hard to tell as other versions are coloured slightly differently but the photos display the condition quite accurately.  There is a little staining / foxing and a crease as obviously this was in a book. A strip of old paper or parchment is fixed to each side and the engraving is attached to the mount with tape at the top: I have not touched any of that.  Please look at the pictures carefully and get in touch if you need more or have any questions.

Please note that although I am sending the frame, or part of it, that is part of the packaging and as such is free.  The purchase price relates only to the painting.  If you want the glass, I can send that but the frame is not in great condition, the glass will need replacing and if I post it with the glass, that will put up the postage costs so please get in touch first if you wish it to be sent.
